Necklace Length Guide

Find Your Perfect Necklace Length

Choosing the right length makes all the difference in how a necklace sits, layers, and flatters. Use this guide to find what works best for you.

Common Necklace Lengths at a Glance

Length Where It Falls Best For
14" Sits at the base of the throat / collarbone Choker-style
16" Collarbone / just below Most popular everyday length; flattering on all necklines
18" Just below the collarbone V-necks, scoop necks; versatile all-day wear
20" Top of the chest / sternum Layering base; open necklines, relaxed styles
24" Upper abdomen Long pendant styles; boho and layered looks
30"+ (Opera/Rope) Mid-chest to below bust Statement layers; can be doubled for a shorter look

Note: Measurements are approximate and may vary slightly based on your build and how a chain is shaped.

How a 2" Extender Changes Your Wear

An extender chain (usually 2") gives you flexibility:

  • A 16" necklace + 2" extender can be worn at 16", 17", or 18" — adapting to necklines and layering needs.
  • Extenders are great for gifting when you're unsure of someone's preferred length.
  • They also allow comfortable sizing adjustments as neck sizes can vary.

Many of our handcrafted pieces include an extender chain.

Matching Length to Neckline

  • Crew neck: 16" sits above fabric; 20"+ layers over it beautifully.
  • V-neck / scoop neck: 16"–18" follows the neckline and draws the eye; 20"–24" adds depth.
  • Off-shoulder / strapless: 16" creates a delicate frame; longer pieces make a bold statement.
  • Plunging neckline: 18"–24" pendants complement the line without competing with it.
  • High neckline / collared shirt: 20"+ worn outside the collar; or layer a 16" under for a peek-a-boo effect.

Layering Tips

Layering is one of our favorite ways to wear handcrafted pieces. A few simple rules:

  • Vary the lengths — space pieces at least 2" apart so they don't compete or tangle.
  • Mix textures — a delicate chain pairs beautifully with a beaded strand or a pendant.
  • Anchor with one focal piece — let one necklace lead (often the longest or the one with the boldest pendant) and build around it.
  • Odd numbers work — 2 or 3 layers tends to look more intentional than 4+.
  • Keep metals consistent or contrast intentionally — mixing gold and silver colored chains is on-trend, but do it with purpose.

A classic starter set: 16" (collarbone) + 18" (delicate chain) + 22" (pendant).

A Note on One-of-a-Kind Pieces

All of our necklaces are one-of-a-kind, handcrafted originals. Measurements listed in each product description are as accurate as possible, but slight variations in chain length, clasp placement, or pendant drop are part of what makes each piece unique.
